There are different pedal types depending on the type of cycling you enjoy. ‘Flat’ or platform pedals are used on hybrid, city and BMX bikes and favoured by mountain bikers who prefer not to be attached to the bike. ‘Clipless’ pedals attach to a cleat on the underside of a special pair of cycling shoes, giving you a solid connection when ‘clipped in’. Clipless pedal systems offer a more efficient pedal stroke and improved power transfer. There are a number different types available from multiple pedal/shoe manufacturers, with the most common being Shimano’s SPD and SPD-SL systems. Ensure they are compatible with your shoes and cleats.
