From a side-on perspective, the new S5 frame looks fairly similar to the old version, but Cervelo has made several changes during the redevelopment of its flagship aero road platform. Through wind tunnel experimentation, Cervelo found that a wider front-end performed better aerodynamically, so the frontal area is now slightly larger, with a wider fork sporting 25 mm tyre clearance and a broader head tube. The overall stack height has been lowered a little too, to allow more aggressive riding positions. Furthermore using the latest TrueAero™ shapes combined with Cervelo's most advanced lay-up knowledge, the S5 doubles the aerodynamic advantage the old S3 had over traditional road bicycles. By adding BBright™ and Smartwall™ engineering, Cervelo maximizes energy response, and raise the torsional rigidity. The result is a quantifiably faster bicycle, which is also agile and responsive, yet smooth and comfortable on the toughest road surfaces. Compared to the new S3, the S5 is lighter and more aerodynamic. A generous cut of the seat tube covers the rear wheel further more. The S5 is featured with a tapered headtube, a special tube shape for higher torsional stiffness and the BBright system which is an oversized bottom bracket. The BB shell is 79 mm wide with internal press-in bearings. This increases bottom bracket stiffness. The hourglass shaped aero headtube on the sides allows an aero cross section without the need for a nose on the head tube. The S5 uses Cervelo's ICS-3 system, which is a series of replaceable Teflon-lined stainless steel cable routing tubes that are bonded into the top tube and fixed internally to the upper downtube. This cable routing system controls the cables' entrance, their curvature inside the frame, as well as their exit angle towards the bottom bracket area.
